 Relay for Life
Back to Full Blog

Last night Branden and a few of the other choir members had promised to sing during the Luminary ceremony at our local Relay for Life. There were only 8 of them, and they sang Amazing Grace. Awesome. This was Branden's first experience with Relay for Life. He was very impressed.

I don't know how many of you have attended a Relay for Life, but a Luminary is just a white paper lunch sack that you write the name of a loved one that has been touched by cancer. Then, they put some sand in the bottom and a candle. The sacks are placed around the track that everyone is walking. At dark, they are all lite. It is impressive and a very special way to honor your loved one who beat cancer or didn't. Just imagine a track lined with little white sacks all glowing with a small candle inside.

Yes, I teared up. Branden wrote my name on his sack, I wrote my mother's name and G-pa wrote the name of his sister who lost her battle a short time ago. We walked a few laps and talked to several people we know. I think next year I will join a team again and walk the night away.

It has been 32 years since I beat cancer. It never meant much to me until lately. Every year I am here and Mom is not, impresses upon my just how very blessed I was back in April 1976. The first Relay for Life I attended was two years ago, in the city I had surgery that removed the cancer from my body. Yes, that one was very special to me.

OK, enough of that. I have heard from Miss Terri and they are all sick. She isn't sure with what, but they are miserable. Fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Terri and the two boys all have it. I asked her about tomatoes, but she said she didn't think that was it. The fever is gone now but the other remains. Skyler got sick last Sunday, Terri got it on Tuesday and then Anthony on Thursday.
I am talking with her right now. She does not sound too healthy.

Well, that is what is going on right now. Not too much excitement...
Everyone feel the {{{Big Hug}}} I am sending.

A Mother's Love

~

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendoured miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

Ron, The Relay can be very emotional at times, and very tiring. I was never able to sleep so by the end, I was dead on my feet!!! (Not this year, I went home.)

I hope June comes home soon, you must be missing her by now. I know I miss her poems.

June should be pulling into the driveway on Friday evening or Saturday - depending on the roads, etc.

We all miss her

GRanny - came by and read through the posts. Some good thoughts as well as humor. But most of all enjoyed reading about how Billy and Brandon are doing. May they continue to move on the upward road - blessings for the week - June
